The Language Department coordinates the activities of language Academies and Sahitya Kala Parishad and processes & sanctions the grant-in-aid to these autonomous bodies. It also processes applications for financial assistance from Delhi Kalyan Samiti and Govt. of India to NGOs/registered cultural institutions and allotment of land. With a view to provide library facilities for the weaker sections of the society, the language department set up libraries in different assembly constituencies in collaboration with NGOs under Bhagidari Scheme. This department organises Hindi & Urdu workshops, competitions, training in Hindi typing, shorthand, noting & drafting with a view to encourage government officials to do maximum work in Hindi. The Language Department was set up in the year 1961-62 to ensure the implementation of progressive use of Hindi in the official work of Govt. of Delhi as laid down in the Constitution of India. At present all matters relating to Translation into Hindi and vice-versa is centralised. It is proposed to decentralise the work at 9 District level. Each district will be provided one Hindi Translator. In addition one Hindi officer will be detailed to supervise two districts each.
